Social Emotional Learning program at Fallon Elementary School

When we are mindful, we are more engaged with the world around us and can be more wholehearted about our experiences. The Empowerment Factory’s Social Emotional Learning program at Fallon Elementary School is design to give Pawtucket RI students mindfulness skills to succeed in school and life.

Throughout, students will be taught mindfulness skills. When we are mindful, we are more engaged with the world around us and can be more wholehearted about our experiences. It will take practice to build this type of full attention, which is why we have made it a ritual at the start of each lesson. Every lesson will start with a grounding breathing/mindfulness exercise.

Check here each week for books and activities you can do at home with your student to continue these lessons after school.

What Are We Learning About Each Week?

We are excited to be working alongside Fallon faculty to integrate a special 6 week Social Emotional Learning (SEL) opportunity into your students’ school day this spring. Each week will have a different focus on topics that include community, feelings, empathy, respect, integrity, and friendship.

Week 1 – Community
Discussions about community, community agreements, and what it means to be in a community. How do people treat each other in a community? Introduction to breathing techniques to calm our brains and body, which will be used a the beginning of each lesson in following weeks.

Week 2 – Feelings
About emotions and how to identify emotions in ourselves.

Week 3 – Empathy
How to identify emotions in others and why it matters for building kindness. Knowing that we have shared needs helps build greater empathy and compassion for ourselves and others.

Week 4 – Respect
How can we responsibly and respectfully express how we feel? How to recognize the value and care that we receive and the impact of our words on others.

Week 5 – Integrity
How do our actions affect others? How do we behave when no one else is watching? Think about integrity as an inner quality (the state of their hearts and minds).

Week 6 – Friendship
Building friendships. What does it mean to be a good friend? Explore everyday acts of kindness and build gratitude.

Follow up Family Event – Art in the Park
An evening event for students and their families. A variety of activities, including reading, art projects, games and refreshments related to the 6 week enrichment opportunity. For more details about TEF’s Art in the Park programs, check out our Learn/Attend page.
