Little Sisters of the Poor Home

In March 1881, five Little Sisters traveled from France to work and open a home for the elderly of Rhode Island.  Like their foundress, Jeanne Jugan, their only resources were sincere hearts, willing spirits, and an empty begging basket.  They lived for two years at the General James Estate on Slocum Street, then moved to the Holy Trinity Home, donated by Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Banigan, and remained there until 1979.

After 4 years of planning and construction, the Little Sisters moved into their current home in 1979, the Jeanne Jugan Residence for the Elderly Poor.  The facility was later expanded to include 27 independent living apartments in the early 1980s.  The Little Sisters of the Poor Home is a testament to the faith of their foundress, Saint Jeanne Jugan, who stated, “Give us the house—if God fills it, God will not abandon it!”  Miracles happen daily in this home—their benefactors and friends are the instruments through which God makes the miracles happen.

History of The Baldwin Loop Walking Path

The Baldwin Loop Walking Path, established in 2017 by The Empowerment Factory, is the first walking path in Pawtucket. It is highlighted during the Healthy Living Community Event each year and has since become a beloved community asset. The path winds through the area surrounding Baldwin Elementary School and features artwork created by community members and local students.

Residents are encouraged to use the path for exercise and engage in various activities accessed through QR codes placed along the way. Since 2017, the Baldwin Loop Scavenger Walk has been an integral part of the Healthy Living Community Event, promoting both physical activity and community involvement.

In 2024, The Empowerment Factory will debut new artwork along the path, featuring historic locations throughout Pawtucket. QR codes will provide information on each location, enhancing the educational aspect of the walk. The scavenger walk, scheduled from September 1 to September 7, promises to be a highlight of the 2024 Healthy Living Community Event.
